Governor
Nyesom Wike of Rivers State on Monday followed through with his pledge to pay
$60,000 to players of NIGERIA'S Olympic football team following their 2-1 home
victory against Congo-Brazzaville in an African U-23 Olympic qualifier on Sunday.
The game took place at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The
governor, who had promised the players the sum of $30,000 for every goal and
$100,000 for a 3-0 victory, addressed the players and officials at a reception
hosted for the team, handing over the sum of $60,000 as promised. He expressed
joy that the team played ONE of the best football games he has seen in years.
"You
guys made Nigerians proud with the way you played against the Congolese,” he
said. “You showed that the future of NIGERIA football is bright and that the
NFF is on the right path in putting the country's football on the world map.”
The
new governor also appealed to the leadership of the NFF to bring more matches,
including those of the Super Eagles, to Port Harcourt, saying his government is
ready to bring a crowd for the team. He mentioned that the people of Rivers
State are ready to put the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium to full capacity.
In
his response, NFF Vice President Barr. Seyi Akinwunmi thanked Governor Wike for
his support, including mobilizing over 40,000 spectators to cheer the Olympic
