Rivers
State governor, Barrister Nyesom Wike can borrow the sum of ten billion naira,
(about $46m) as the Rivers State House of Assembly gave the approval on Thursday.
Speaker
of the House, Ikunyi Awaji-Igbani, who read the request letter from Wike said the
loan is to be taken from Zenith Bank to enable the state government commence
projects in the state.
According
to the speaker, “No government can run without a financial base. We must
provide succour for our people, so that they can begin to see changes between
yesterday and today.
''This
Assembly will not engage in frivolous approval and resolutions. As an Assembly,
we have the responsibility to know what the funds sought are meant for,” the
speaker said.
The speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly also added that there are measures in place to ensure that servicing the loan facility does not become a burden to the state government.
“This
House hereby approves the request by the His Excellency, the Governor of Rivers
state for a N10b loan facility from Zenith Bank to finance vital developmental
projects in the state,” the Speaker said.
The
immediate past administration is said to have left an empty treasuring hence
the notion to approve the loan.
When
the matter came up for voting, twenty eight law makers were in support.
