Governor
Nyesom Wike of Rivers on Friday in Port Harcourt inaugurated an organising
committee for the city’s hosting of two INTERNATIONAL football matches in July.
Speaking
while inaugurating the committee at Government House in Port Harcourt, Wike
said hosting the matches would promote the state as a safe place for business
and sports.
“The
approval of the hosting of the matches in Port Harcourt by the Nigeria Football
Federation (NFF) is an INDICATION of the confidence the football body has in
the state.
“We
must ensure that the matches are SUCCESSFUL and played under a secured
atmosphere,” he said.
The
governor said the state would continue to play host to important national and
international events to “dispel false information peddled by political
opponents”.
He
urged the committee to get to WORK immediately and determine the stadium to be
used between the Liberation Stadium and the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium.
In
his response, Chairman of the committee, Boma Iyaye, ASSURED the governor that
he and his colleagues would ensure that the matches were hosted successfully.
The
matches are Super Falcons versus Equatorial Guinea on July 18, and the Dream
Team VI versus Congo’s under-23 male national team on July 19.
